Make one batch of our Classic Brownies according to the instructions. Cool completely. Cut into 9 squares (3 x 3).
Step 2
Make one buttercream recipe of your choice.
Step 3
Remove about ½ cup of buttercream and place into a small bowl. Divide the remaining buttercream into 3 medium bowls.
Step 4
Add the cocoa powder to the small bowl of buttercream and mix well. Add a few drops of black gel food colouring until the desired colour is reached.
Step 5
Add orange gel food colouring to one of the bowls and mix, adding a few drops at a time until the desired colour is reached.
Step 6
Add light green gel food colouring to a second bowl of buttercream and mix, adding a few drops at a time until the desired colour is reached.
Step 7
Leave the remaining medium bowl of buttercream uncoloured (white).
Step 1
Fit a medium ribbon or basketweave piping tip into a piping bag. Fill with orange buttercream.
Step 2
Place a small ribbon or basket weave piping tip into a piping bag. Fill with black buttercream.
Step 3
On a cooled brownie, pipe vertical stripes of orange buttercream to mimic the surface of a pumpkin. Repeat the process with 2 other brownies.
Step 4
With the black buttercream, pipe the desired jack-o’-lantern face onto the orange brownie, ensuring the orange stripes are vertical. Repeat the process with the remaining two brownies.
Step 1
Fit a medium ribbon or basketweave piping tip into a piping bag. Fill with the plain (white) buttercream.
Step 2
On a cooled brownie, place a tiny amount of buttercream on the back of two candy eyes and place about halfway down the brownie.
Step 3
Pipe stripes above and below the eyes, crisscrossing the stripes to mimic a mummy's bandages. Repeat the process so that you have three mummy brownies.
Step 1
Dollop a small amount of green buttercream onto the remaining 3 brownies and smooth the top off using a small offset spatula.
Step 2
Use the black buttercream to pipe short vertical stripes to make hair. Repeat the process with the remaining brownies.
Step 3
Carefully place candy eyes onto each brownie and add a brown or black rod sprinkle above each candy eye for eyebrows. Add a pink rod sprinkle for his mouth. Repeat the process with the remaining brownies.
*The longer black food colouring sits mixed in with the buttercream, the more intense the colour will be. Make the buttercream while the brownies are cooling to ensure a dark colour and prevent the need to add too much food gel colouring.
*Store brownies in an airtight container at room temperature for 2 days. Store in the fridge for up to 5 days. Allow the refrigerated decorated brownies to come to room temperature before serving.
